جب کہیں انقلاب ہوتا ہے ، قدرت اللہ شہاب ہوتا ہے

Isolate the views of Habib Jalib and events quoted by Mumtaz Mufti regarding Abul Asar, services of Mawlana Hafeez Jalandhari in terms of his instauration of national anthem of Pakistan, his contribution to the urdu verse in particular and religion in general in the form of  شاہنامہ اسلام   Shahnama-e-Islam  cannot be disregarded. While the cross-purpose and context of his verse is yet to be examined but he once frankly observed – in the form of couplet-that:

Jab kahin inqilab hota hai,
Qudratullah Shahab hota hai!

جب کہیں انقلاب ہوتا ہے ،
قدرت اللہ شہاب ہوتا ہے !

 Conveying,
Wherever there is a “revolution” –upheaval for few-
 There is Qudratullah Shahab.

Irrelevant to the context and perception of the poet,  followers of Shahab share the same opinion for the officer. Forasmuch as he not only gained “Deen” دین   by practicing and imparting Islamic socio-politico religious code of life but also acquired “Duniya” دنیا  by achieving materialistic and worldly successes.

They substantiate their argument with few facts such as referring to his top postings as Indian Civil Servant, and Civil Servant of Pakistan among the cream of crop. Plus, his success as literary figure of Urdu language. His elevation in the matters of Deen دین    and Tarikh طریق  to the effect that few revere him as “Green Sufi”.

Such kudos go to the utmost stretch of elasticity when his worst critics like late Khalid Hasan (former diplomat, intellectual, writer and columnist) acknowledge his ‘charm and likeability’ and opined about his magnum opus Shahab Nama         شہاب نامہ as –to quote his words - book which sells consistently, edition after edition, and has done so since its publication nearly twenty years ago.

Albeit, his role can be debated to every angle, and aspect. Fact remains that as a writing genius he secured Readers Digest’s award in puerility. And was first to qualify ICS competition exam from the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Even though formerly as a component of iron frame of British Empire – the bureaucracy that made Britons rule up to no sunset – and latter as a legacy, he continued his pro-people and tenderhearted administration. Be it opening of strategic reserves of wheat in famine hit Bihar province during war time for the common man or let it be the hilarious receipt of three paisa of bribe from a beldame for commissioning the transfer of her paltry property.

As the saying goes his efforts – machinations for few- are not confined to certain space and time rather have far-reaching and consequential impacts to the deepening from past to present and extending to future. Even though, negatively these impacts are also observed by his critics. He is surely a man on 'duty'.
